Mumbai is the largest eco-Ganpati market in India

Mumbai's eco-Ganpati ecosystem has grown faster than any other city in the country. BMC has expanded artificial ponds and home-immersion campaigns, and in 2025 Mumbai reported more than 60,000 idols immersed in artificial ponds on the first visarjan day alone — including roughly half that were eco-friendly idols.

The Bombay High Court has held that PoP idols up to six feet must be immersed only in artificial water bodies, and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board's 2025 SOP reinforces the same. Larger eco-friendly idols can still be immersed in natural water where comparable artificial arrangements are unavailable. In practice this means a Mumbai buyer choosing an eco-friendly Shadu Mati, paper, or seed Ganesha idol is making both the traditional and the easier-compliance choice.

Konkan artisans now supply Mumbai with traditional Shadu Mati murtis, and a growing roster of paper-pulp and seed-Ganesha studios serve the city's apartment market. This page lists every verified Mumbai eco-Ganpati seller and idol on MittiMurti.

Mumbai eco-Ganpati guidance

BMC artificial-pond visarjan

BMC publishes a list of artificial ponds and mobile immersion vehicles in every ward each year. Eco-friendly home idols up to six feet are best immersed at home; idols above six feet should be coordinated with the local ward office.

No PoP idols are listed on MittiMurti

Plaster of Paris idols are banned under CPCB's 2020 revised guidelines and restricted in Mumbai under court orders. Sellers attempting to label PoP as eco-friendly are removed from the platform.
