The science-led eco-Ganesha
Alum idols are a newer eco-Ganpati category pioneered by chemistry-trained idol makers. Alum is a widely used water flocculant: as the idol dissolves slowly during artificial-tank or bucket immersion, it pulls suspended particles out of the water.
These idols are best suited for controlled immersion (artificial tanks, large buckets) rather than open river immersion, where the flocculation effect is less meaningful.
